Getting There

When you're traveling a great distance, some delays can be expected. Other holdups, however, can be avoided with a little planning.

Traveling by Plane

Get to the airport early. Many airlines recommend checking in as early as three hours for some international flights.

Your airline will be able to provide you with check-in procedures for your particular flight.

Airport Security

If it has been a while since you have booked a commercial flight, you may want to visit the TSA site, which offers advice for making navigating national and international airports.

Flying with Liquids

Liquid carry-ons have their own specific requirements. Download the TSA form (pdf, 638kb) for information about traveling with gels, medications, breast milk and other liquids.

Flying with Infants

Getting through security can take a little longer with kids in tow. Compact strollers and car seats must go through the x-ray machines. Larger strollers may need to be emptied and screened manually.

Virtually all airlines allow you to gate check your baby's stroller at the end of the jetway, then pick it up the moment you get off the plane. Some airlines also offer early boarding for families traveling with infants. Check with your airline to be sure.

Traveling by Car

As tempting as it may be to pack as many miles as possible between breaks, keep in mind that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends drivers take a scheduled break every two hours on long road trips.

Traveling with kids? Snacks and games can go a long way to maintaining family serenity. The same goes for those aforementioned breaks. Learn more by reading Parenting.com's Every Last Thing I Know about Traveling with Kids.

If car seats are needed, you may want to visit the NHTSA site to determine guidelines for child passenger safety.

Traveling with pets? Experts recommend you give Fido a break every two hours as well.

Of course, you don't want to hit the road to find out later your car wasn’t properly prepared to make the trip. Check coolant levels, oil, belts and hoses, and tire pressure (including the spare) before you set out. Go to eHow.com to learn more about preparing your car for a road trip.

Renting a Car

Rental agencies such as Avis and Budget offer special rates for military personnel who book through Veteran's Holidays.

Traveling by Public Transportation

Perhaps a rental car isn't practical or economically feasible in your destination. Your Veteran's Holidays property should be able to provide information about public transportation in the area.
